Geisberg School

The Schule am Geisberg is a state-approved special school for emotional and social development and sick pupils, as well as a special educational counseling and support center.

The Geisberg School also includes the Center for Counseling and Educational Assistance in the Main-Taunus district (ZeBiM).

Special needs school EMS

at multiple locations

At our school, students with a focus on emotional and social development are supported and guided in their individual and personal development, helping them to achieve emotional stability and, where possible, return to the mainstream school system or obtain a secondary school diploma.

Children and young people are taught in grades 1 to 10. At some locations, there are different grade levels due to the support plan.

Information about the individual locations of the special school can be found below.

Schule am Geisberg Wiesbaden campus – Elementary level

Primary school-aged pupils are taught in accordance with the core curriculum for primary schools. Depending on individual abilities and in consultation with parents or guardians, the content, time and social requirements placed on the child vary. Some children are initially introduced to schoolwork gently and in small steps through practical and more playful activities in short one-to-one lessons. The majority participate in lessons in a cross-grade learning group, which is led by as few and as consistent caregivers as possible. The lessons are supplemented by individual support lessons and are adapted in type and scope to the child's individual stage of development. There are up to 8 students in the learning groups.

The goal upon admission is usually to return the child to a mainstream school. This transition is facilitated through accompanied cooperation with a local elementary school.

Schule am Geisberg Wiesbaden campus – Secondary level I

In secondary level I, students in grades 5-10 are taught in a variety of different ways. Special programs focus on areas that offer alternative support options for students depending on their individual level of development and abilities. The goals are to return students to a general school, help them obtain a degree (secondary school or junior high school diploma), or prepare them for vocational training or the transition to a career.

When forming learning groups, the focus is on the respective emotional and social development level of the learner, which is why they are usually composed of up to 10 students from different grades. The scope of instruction and the size of the learning group are adjusted according to the individual needs, abilities, and emotional state of the students. For example, at the beginning or in crisis situations, instruction can be greatly reduced in terms of time and take place in an individual setting, and then gradually expanded in terms of type and scope.

From grade 8/9 onwards, students are usually taught individual subjects in comprehensive courses in order to gradually prepare them for a possible transition to vocational or secondary school.

In order to develop career prospects, it can be useful for students to regularly complete practical days in companies throughout the school year. This gives them the opportunity to get to know different professions from grade 7 onwards and, if necessary, secure a future apprenticeship.

Schule am Geisberg – Amöneburg external class

In the Amöneburg district of Wiesbaden, pupils who require special support in the cognitive area in addition to special educational support for their emotional and social development are taught in the Amöneburg external class as a further component of secondary education. In addition to adapted teaching content and reduced time requirements, practical everyday topics play an important role here.

There are also three learning workshops exclusively for male
adolescents, who generally exhibit high levels of delinquency.

Through cooperation with various general schools in Wiesbaden, selected students who are entitled to
special educational support are given the opportunity to participate in classes at these schools. They are accompanied by a responsible teacher from the Geisberg school and supported in case of problems. This offer is not only intended to prepare them for a possible return to school, but also to meet the needs of those students for whom general school is the most suitable place of support.

Schule am Geisberg – Darmstadt location

At the branch in Darmstadt, students in grades 5 to 10 who, due to their life situation or personality structure, are temporarily unable to integrate into the school system of a regular school despite inclusive support measures, receive individual instruction. The aim of this temporary separate schooling is to return the students to mainstream schooling. At the Darmstadt location, students from grade 5 onwards are taught in a highly differentiated manner with regard to all variables of lesson design (time, place, content, group size, group composition). Often starting with one-to-one lessons, students are carefully integrated into mixed-age learning groups. Lesson times and class sizes are always adapted to the current performance level and emotional state of the students and, if possible, expanded. The transition from one-to-one lessons to a learning group takes place after consultation between all parties involved.

Students who are willing to work hard can transfer to a general school as part of the cooperation program. A teacher from the Geisberg school is available to provide support, coordinate with class teachers, and hold parent-teacher conferences. The lessons are based on the secondary school educational standards of the Hessian Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs. The program also offers the opportunity to obtain a secondary school diploma.

Schule am Geisberg – EBU Breslauer Straße location

There is another location of the Geisberg School in Groß-Gerau, which is run in cooperation with the Nieder-Ramstädter Diakonie Foundation's Children, Youth, and Family Division (NRD) under the name "EBU Breslauer Straße." At EBU Breslauer Straße, students are taught and supervised in two classes. The classes (grades 1 to 6) are mixed in terms of age and grade level. The educational program offered by the Schule am Geisberg and the NRD's educational day group program are closely interlinked.  Lessons and educational activities take place in the morning and afternoon, and all activities are tailored to the individual developmental stages of each child in terms of scope and type. Starting with individual lessons as a rule, the pupils are gently integrated into the class structure. Teaching and supervision times are adapted to the children's current abilities and emotional state and extended whenever possible. This means that children can be supervised in a full-day program from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. if their resilience and emotional and social development allow it.

Schule am Geisberg – EBU Nordring Groß-Gerau location

The EBU Nordring location provides schooling for students in grades 5-10 who, due to their individual support needs, are temporarily unable to successfully integrate into the school system of a general school, despite inclusive support measures. EBU stands for "Erzieherische Bildung und Unterricht" (educational training and teaching), and the name itself makes it clear that the EBU Nordring location offers more than "just school." The youth welfare organization of the Nieder-Ramstädter Diakonie Foundation, Children, Youth, and Family Division (NRD for short), is a permanent cooperation partner at the location.  In addition to classroom support, NRD offers various forms of social group work in individual and small groups in the area of social learning. The program is tailored to the needs and abilities of the students. Often starting with individual lessons, the students are gently integrated into mixed-age learning groups. Class times and class sizes are always adapted to the current performance level and emotional state of the students and, if possible, expanded. The composition of the learning groups is based less on grade level and more on the developmental level and interaction skills and forms of the young people. Those who tend to withdraw and need a safe space attend different learning groups than those who react predominantly impulsively and extrovertedly in conflict situations. The aim is to support the students in their academic and personal development so that they can either return to the general school system or obtain a qualified secondary school diploma.  In order to achieve both goals, an appreciative, tolerant attitude on the part of adults and a focus on the strengths and successes of the young people are important cornerstones of our work. The students should be given a new opportunity every day to develop academically and personally.  Our motto is: Nothing exists without context. This principle means that we always work in close consultation with parents, young people, and the youth welfare office to ensure maximum transparency for all involved and to make the most of this transparency.

Schule am Geisberg – EBU Bad Homburg location

At the EBU Bad Homburg branch, students in grades 1 to 10 who, due to their life situation or personality structure, are temporarily unable to integrate into the school system of a regular school despite inclusive support measures, receive individual instruction.  Teachers and educational specialists meet the students at their individual educational level and support and encourage them in their further development. The program is therefore tailored to the needs and abilities of the students.

The teaching time and size of the learning groups are adapted to the current abilities and emotional state of the students and, if possible, expanded. In addition to the development of academic content, creative projects and individualized sports offerings round out the curriculum at the location.  The aim is for students to acquire the skills they need for their academic and personal development, either to return to the mainstream school system or, if possible, to obtain a qualified secondary school leaving certificate.

At our support center in Mainz, students with a focus on emotional and social development are supported and guided in their individual and personal development, helping them to achieve emotional stability and, where possible, return to the mainstream school system or obtain a secondary school diploma.

Children and young people in grades 5 to 9 are taught.

In the clearing class, students spend up to 3 months to determine which type of school is most suitable for them.

In the learning workshops, male students aged 11 to 17 are taught in small groups of 6–7 students by a teacher and an educational specialist and receive social-educational support. This is a full-day program running from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The program is aimed at students who have not attended school for a long time and/or exhibit significant behavioral problems and a high propensity for violence and delinquency. They receive instruction tailored to their social-emotional development level and abilities. Everyday life in the learning workshop consists of school learning, workshop instruction, and experiential education, which can be understood as social group training.

Students also have the opportunity to earn pocket money in the afternoons by providing services. Through outreach work by the educational staff, students receive support both in accepting the offer and in extracurricular activities. Intensive parental involvement is considered a central component.

In the learning workshop, students have the opportunity to obtain a secondary school diploma or leave school with a secondary school leaving certificate. The educational staff support the students in entering a follow-up vocational program, an apprenticeship, or working life after school.

Prevention / ZeBiM

General education schools are increasingly enrolling disadvantaged children and young people with special needs who do not receive the necessary support for their personal circumstances. They stand out because of their behavior, for example, aggression and refusal to participate. They are often at risk of being excluded from the general school system.

This is where the support services offered by ZeBiM (Main-Taunus district) and the Mainz clearing class with their special support come in.

Becoming a top student with the help of her teacher

ZeBiM is a support and educational assistance program for general education schools in the Main-Taunus district. School plays a central role in the lives of children, young people, and their families. School years have a decisive influence on personal future opportunities.

General education schools are increasingly attended by disadvantaged children and young people with special needs, whom the general education system is unable to support adequately in their personal circumstances. They stand out because of their behavior, for example aggression and refusal to participate. They are often at risk of being excluded from the general school system.

ZeBiM's teachers and social educators promote the social and emotional behavior of young people as part of preventive measures so that they can better cope with their regular school and their living environment.
