Making Sustainability Measurable: EVIM Significantly Reduces CO₂ Emissions
For EVIM, supporting people and opening up new opportunities for them also means managing the natural resources essential to life in a responsible manner. Sustainability is therefore an integral part of the company’s strategy and an expression of EVIM’s mission statement: “We conduct our work in a transparent and accountable manner and manage all available resources responsibly.”
EVIM has already enshrined climate protection as a strategic corporate goal in its 2023 Overall Strategy. The company aims to transparently track its resource consumption and continuously reduce it. The 2025 Carbon Footprint provides a solid data foundation for this and shows which measures are already having an impact and where further action is needed.
With the CO₂ footprint, EVIM is making this commitment measurable company-wide for the first time. Greenhouse gas emissions from all business units were recorded in accordance with internationally recognized standards.
CO₂ Footprint Shows Progress and Areas for Action
The results show a positive trend: Compared to the previous year, EVIM was able to reduce emissions of climate-damaging greenhouse gases by about ten percent. In total, the company generated approximately 9,100 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2025. A key factor in this achievement is the consistent use of green electricity. As a result, the purchased electricity no longer contributes to CO₂ emissions in the company’s carbon footprint.
At the same time, the assessment clearly highlights where the greatest challenges lie. The heating of buildings with natural gas continues to account for the largest share of emissions. Other significant factors include employees’ daily commutes and food service at the facilities. This is precisely where the greatest potential lies for further reducing CO₂ emissions in the coming years.
Systematically Advancing Climate Protection
EVIM is already implementing concrete measures in many areas. These include the expansion of photovoltaic systems, increased use of electric vehicles, reduced electricity consumption from the public grid, and a high proportion of vegetarian options in the education sector. At the same time, the data foundation is being continuously improved so that future measures can be planned even more effectively and their impact better assessed.
“Sustainability begins with transparency. Only when we know our emissions can we take targeted action and improve step by step. That’s exactly where the carbon footprint comes in,” concludes Andrea Posch, a staff member in the Real Estate Management, Housing, Energy, and Sustainability division.
EVIM is pursuing a clear course for the coming years. The focus is on the gradual reduction of natural gas consumption, the expansion of renewable heat supply, more sustainable mobility, regional and climate-friendly food services, and the integration of binding climate targets into the company’s energy management.
“With our overall strategy, we have consciously set out to systematically embed sustainability in our company. The carbon footprint is much more than just a snapshot of the current situation. It creates transparency, makes progress measurable, and helps us make the right decisions for EVIM’s sustainable development,” says Jörg Wiegand, Chief Financial Officer.
With the carbon footprint assessment, EVIM is laying the groundwork to manage sustainability even more effectively in the future. In doing so, the company is consistently pursuing its overall strategy and combining economic responsibility with its diaconal mission. For EVIM, acting sustainably means more than just conserving resources and reducing emissions. It also means taking responsibility for people’s livelihoods—both today and in the future. (hk)
